FIRST DAY
KURUMATHUR ILLAM VISIT
Kurumathur illam, on the banks of the Valapattanam
River in Kannur District, is one of the few 'Ettukettu' buildings still
standing. Mana or Illam is the home of Nambuthiri, the Brahmin community of
Kerala. the Illam is situated in a
rustic village of Kurumathur (place name and surname are the same) with
extensive grounds and additional structures: Padippura (gate with guest rooms),
Pathayappura (corn complex), Kulappura (pond with bath hut) and a nearby
temple. They were addressed as Kurumathur Naikkar.
The complex consists of a main courtyard and the
four surrounding blocks known as the Valiyam Bhagam. The smaller courtyard and
surrounding blocks are collectively referred to as Kunjhan Bhagam. According to
tradition, this area was reserved for the ladies of the family. The kitchen,
dining room etc. are also found in this block.
Besides the ground floor there are two more apartments in Thekkini'
(South Block) and Padinjaatti (West Block). The second floor is an attic and is
not divided

PALAMRITHU ILLAM
Palamruthillam, on the banks of the Vellikkeel river
in Kannur district, is one of the few “Ettukettu” buildings still standing.
This Brahminagriha is a two-storey bungalow spread over an area of 4900 square
feet in a scenic setting, evoking the splendour of Kerala’s unique
architectural style. Constructions that evoke the charm of woodwork and
masonry. The house, which is about two hundred and fifty years old and has
thirty-three fat doors, bears any historically conscious person bows in front
of this relatively low door.

and north direction for the entry of a house. Besides aesthetics and comfort,

houses are built to withstand heavy rain and heat. The traditional architecture
of Kerala is known for its use of natural materials and comfortable,
well-ventilated interiors.
