MADAYIPARA

The gorgeous Madayipara is situated in Madayi village in the Kannur district. It is a popular tourist destination located in the vicinity of Pazhayangadi town. Known for its biodiversity, Madayipara is home to rare butterflies and flowers. Madayipara, located near Kuppam river, has many historical stories associated with the Ezhimala kings. On the terrace you can see the ruins of an old fort and its watchtower. Madayi Kavu is another major attraction for the visitors. This temple is also known as Thiruvarkad Bhagavti Temple. Bhagavati is the deity of Madayi Kavu. The vadukunda Siva temple is also located nearby. Malik dinar palli or Madayipalli is also here. Biodiversity is the main attraction of Madayipara. It is estimated that there are more than 300 species of flowers, 30 species of grasses, more than 100species of butterflies, and more than 150 species of birds in Madayipara. Madayipara is one of the busiest tourist destinations in Kerala. At the Malayalam month of ‘Chingam ‘the Madayipara roses in blue. The Crow flower (Utricularia reticulata) or Kakkapoovu will swallow the whole of Madayipara. The location is as beautiful as the blue sea. Many well-known and yet unnamed butterflies in circles, such as the Eric Tappi, the Pontachuttan, the golden Winged, and the Viravalan. They come in many colors and sizes. And trunks.

Nature has prepared an organic spring here. Perennial ponds retain the vitality of Madayipara even in hot summers. One of them is a square pond made of huge black rock. History says that this well has been used by the Greeks and Jews for Centuries. It is located in a place where the Jews who came for trade-built huts lived as a colony. The other is the vadukunda Temple Pond, which is associated with legends. Legend has it that Lord Siva stabled his daughter Bhadrakali with a scepter to bathe her. And also, there were various ponds here. story, legend, history, and faith are intertwined here. The city of Madayi or Marahi is said to have been built by the Mooshaka king Vallabhan 2nd. Madayipara is one of the important shrines in North Malabar and the Vadukunda Shiva temple is one of the famous shrines in the Kannur district. Madayikavu is also known as the Thiruvarkad Kavu. Bhadrakali is the main deity of the temple. History tells many stories as to how the Kavu got the name Thiruverkadu Kavu. The first place of worship for the goddess or Bhagavati was at the Rajarajeshwari temple. But the goddess was not satisfied with the poojas here. the goddess wanted to move away from the temple. As goddess wish the velichapad took fire and threw it at Ezhimala. It fell into the forest on the banks of Ezhimala. The local forest was engulfed in flames. The place where burnt, later known as Eripuram. Bhagavati was worshiped there, leaving only the bonfire. That the Thiruvarkad later became the Bhagavati as it was the Bhagavati established at the place where Thiruvarkad was shown.

It is said that Thiruvarkad became the place where Kali killed Darika and dumped him. Thiruvarkad Bhagwati I is the goddess of the Chirakkal dynasty.  Shakteya pooja is performed here.  Madayi Kavu is one of the rare temples where fish and meat are worshiped.

Madayi is also a land of religious harmony. The friendship between Madayipalli and Madayikavu on the banks of the Killanad is a clear example of this. On the way to Kavu while holding Thidambu, he would bow down when he approached the mosque. Similarly, the mosque used to give coins for the Kavu festival. Madayipalli was founded in 1124 AD. When the Malik dinar family expressed their desire to set up a mosque, Kolathiri happily offered the land. It is said that there was a famous Buddhist Monastery here. 

The Madayipara was the headquarters of Udayavarman, the king of Kolathunadu. It is said that Cherusseri, a member of king Kolathiri, lived here. Krishnapattu is still recited during the month of Chingam in the Madayi area. The area including Madayipara was formerly under Portuguese rule. Madayi is the historic place where many battles and peace talks took place. At that time the campground was at this location. History has it that Hyder Ali and his army settled here for some time in 1765-66. It was here that Hyder Ali signed some treaties with a British company. 

Madayipara is the place with the highest lignite deposits in Kerala. Most of the Chinese clay is found not far from the Vadukunda temple. The excavations were carried out here years ago but were stopped due to strong opposition from nature lovers. It is feared that clay mining will upset the balance of Madayipara. 

Madayipara is like a green carpet spread during the monsoons. Like the blue sea during Onam. In the summer it is the color of molten iron. The view and experience of the place will change over time. You have to know it by experience. It is impossible to divide into words. Because of its stunning beauty, many visitors and tourists came to Madayipara for explore nature.
