WAYANAD HERITAGE MUSEUM

The Wayanad Heritage Museum brings you memories of history. This is one of the best Archaeological museums in Kerala. When you visit the museum, you can witness the largest artefact collection that can’t be seen anywhere in Kerala. Here we can see so many things that depict Kerala's history, and culture and also understand how our state developed in the field of technology and infrastructure.

The museum also known as Ambalavayal Heritage museum, that situated at Ambalavayal in Wayanad district which is about 12 km from sultan Bathery. Here we can see artefacts back in the museum are controlled and managed by the District Tourism Promotion Council 2nd century. During the period of the 1980s, anthropologists attempted to research and preservation of the Edakkal caves they collected many artefacts from the district mainly in Sulthan Bathery, Ambalavayal and the forest around the Wayanad district. The museum is a great tourist attraction, they can explore their recreational experience and also for educational purposes. If you entered int the museum you can see the statues of Nandi – the adobe of Lord Shiva. Crossing, you will enter the area where they have preserved the alluvial soils in glass-in-glass boxes.

Within the museum, we can see antiques are displayed in four categories.  The first category is Veerasmruthi, in this, tourists can see different types of pictorial rock edits named veerakkallu or Hero stones. In the Gothrasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi section, there are artefacts related to tribal life like jewellery, hunting and fishing weapons, cowbells, farming implements and musical instruments. The Devasmruthi section is mainly for scholars and academicians. And also, tourists can see terracotta figures, antiques related to the Malabar region, stone idols and local craftwork. In the museum, there is a multi-media theatre for displaying documentaries and docudrama related to the museum. 

The exhibits in the museum include many stone weapons, stone carvings, 14th to 16th-century sculptures, pottery of the Megalithic age, hunting equipment, clay sculptures and other interesting artefacts. Idols made of hard and soft rocks, which were believed to be worshipped by the ancient people too can see in the museum. And the outside view of the museum is blissful.  The trees, small garden and large heritage building are so nostalgic that would be in awe. Surely a fun-filled educational experience is what the museum is all about.
