BANASURA SAGAR DAM

Have you ever heard of India’s largest dam built entirely in the mud?

If you haven’t heard of it, there is a dam in Kerala. Its called BANASURA SAGAR DAM. The dam was built in the year 1979. Banasura dam is located in the village of padinjarathara in the Wayanad district. Many people come every day to see this dam situated across the karamanathodu river. We can see the entrance of the dam itself has been turned into a tourist destination. Banasura Sagar dam made entirely of mud without the use of concrete. It is the largest mud dam in India.  The dam is made of large rocks, stones and mud. The dam cost 190 crore and it required 33 lakh cubic meters of soil to build. History said they started the Banasura Sagar dam as part of the Indian Banasura Sagar project with a small canal and dam. 

The purpose of Indian Banasura Sagar project was to supply water to the kakkayam dam for power generation and to use it for irrigation. Although the construction of the dam has completed but the Banasura Sagar project is yet to be completed.  The major highlight of Banasura Sagar dam is that it is the first dam in India to install solar panels on top of the dam. Many verities of tourists’ spots can be seen inside the dam itself. pine forest, children’s park and boating attract tourists to dam. The view of the   boat going through the reservoir of the dam is very beautiful and adventures. The dam was named Banasura Sagar because it was built in the valley of Banasura hill. The area prepared for the long view of the dam is full of pine trees. It is full of swing ropes. Here it is always shady and we can swing with the wind coming from the dam. Lots of plants and farmed fish can be seen here. 

There are also other activities that horse riding and ropeway. these activities attract children. the boat ride through the hills inside the dam is a sight to behold.  In the distance we can see Banasura hill like a guard. The reservoir reaches the places of manjoora, kuttiyamvayal and pathammile.  People first came to the village of Thariyod at the valley of the Banasura hill. They start farming and make their own houses there.  they built a village at the place. But when the dam came, the village was completely destroyed. Now people come here to enjoy the beauty of the dam. We can also enjoy the beauty of the dam by staying at the resorts around the lake. Banasura Sagar is a suitable spot for the family trip apart from the boating, visitors can spend time with the park, fish spa and garden. From the boat ride the Banasura hill come into view along with innumerable other hills. When the water level is in the lake falls during the summer elephants are swim to the island’s greenery. The place and crystal-clear waters along with the mist cloud mountains in the background attract a number of visitors here and serve as an ideal picnic spot.
