Kavvayi is a lake that turned into Kuttanad in Payyannur when the plane touched the soil of Kannur. Despite its historical significance beyond British rule, Kavvayi lake’s fortune was revealed when the shadow of an aeroplane fell on it. Kavvayi Island of hundreds of coconut palms. A flat area with grass covering the feet.  It is one of the forest backwater destinations in Kannur, Kerala. It is the third-largest backwater in Kerala and one in the whole of North Kerala. Like other beautiful backwater locations, Kavvayi has its charms that can literally make you fall in love with the place. Kavvayi, although still having an element of virgin beauty, has been known by many ancient travellers to the country.

Here we can see Olappura telling the news to the guests, and cooking food. Coconut stumps to sit on, tent to sleep on. There is a trench in the middle of the meadows through the coconut groves to the middle of the island, that’s where the Kayaks (fibre boats) stop. Kavvayi lake is not a scary lake. There is only water along the waist. Even those who do not know how to swim can paddle without fear. We can see the sand at the bottom of the lake looks like gold scattered. Kavvayi is the longest lake in North Malabar. It is full of Carp and Crabs.

Mangroves are the main attraction of Kavvayi lake. The eastern part of the mangroves is in the Kannur district. West ray chira Kasaragod. On the west side, the upland is covered with coconut groves. There are old houses in the middle of the gardens. Boats from Kavvayi are the main means of transportation for the home runners. The Madakkal bund is located in the middle of the Kandal forest(mangroves), which connects the two places with Kannur. You can reach the bund by boat for 10 minutes from the middle of the mangroves. 

You can sail north from Kavvayi lake and go to the beach. Kavvayi is a long stretch of beach in Pancharamanal. White-tailed deer on the sand dunes as the bush fell. It’s a beautiful sight that will make you want to tea it home in a snack. The waves in Kavvayi are dangerous. You can enjoy the view from the shade of Kattadi maram (kite tree).  

The visitors can simply find a lot of peace and tranquillity at this place. Either enjoy long walks admiring the greenery or hop on to any of the country boats, taking in the cool breeze and absorbing the greenery or hop onto any of the country boats, taking in the cool breeze and absorbing the incredible surroundings. 

Also, there are a number of small and big islands surrounding the Kavvayi Backwaters, whose fernery and mesmerizing sights are more than inspiring. An expedition on a boat, from Kotti to Kottapuram Is just incredible and lets one see and enjoy the wonderful sights of Kavvayi Kayal.

The authorities organise Kayaking events and have developed a park near the ferry at Kavvayi, serving as a breath-taking view of the entire backwaters. The visitors can sit and watch the boats go by, and also avail of boating facilities. One of the most popular adventures sports here is water Zorbing. Inside the large inflated plastic ball, to be able to walk on the water without getting wet. 

Preferably the best time to visit the island is from October to March, so this time is very cool and pleasant and the ideal time for all nature walks, adventure sports, boating trips and picnics.
